His Early Life |
Alexander Hamilton was born on January 11th, 1757 in the British West Indies. When he was very young his father had abandoned his mother and himself, then when he was 11 his mother died. While being in poverty and not having a source of income he began working that same year as a clerk in a counting house. Later on Hamilton visits St. Croix at the age of 14, meeting a New York trader, immediately recognizes his natural intelligence the trader makes it possible for Hamilton to go to America to study. He attended a preparatory school in New Jersey and developed contacts with men who had created a movement seeking colonial independence. At 16 he attends King’s College, which is now called Columbia University, where he became active in the local patriot movement. In 1780, Alexander Hamilton marries the daughter of a Major General and Hudson Valley Landlord, Elizabeth Schuyler.

Alexander Hamilton is primarily known for his role in American politics and the development of its government, but he has also been an influence in US history through both his military and law careers as well.
