I chose Alexander Hamilton as my topic because I have always had an interest in him and how he was the main individual in the creation of the beginning of the United States’ economic system. I originally had a hard time deciding on what part about Hamilton I wanted this project to be about, but I was able to create a thesis that allowed me to discuss most of his life through the three major careers he had. I conducted my research by starting off with a general web search of Alexander Hamilton, then using the general information provided by the website I could research more specific aspects of Hamilton’s life. Such as finding a page about him while he was the Secretary of the Treasury which was provided by the US Department of the Treasury. Then from the more specific web page, I was able to go to the Library of Congress website or Yale University’s Avalon Project website and search for primary documents and images that were related to the various careers Alexander Hamilton took part in. I decided to create a website because I think of website as an easy and self explanatory way of conveying information. You only need to include the most important details and leave out all the “fluff” that would be in a paper. It is also easily accessible anywhere that has internet. I did find it difficult to create a website though, there is so much you want to say but you have to decide what is most important and whether it strengthens the thesis. I did not use this year's NHD theme, but I used one from previous years, it was “the individual”. My project was entirely about Alexander Hamilton and how he was an influential individual in United States history. I used his career in the military, as a lawyer, and as a politician to define how he was an influential person. Focusing in on him, and only mentioning people that had a direct relationship with him, such as Washington or Aaron Burr.
